The leaders of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Ikwuano local government council have called on members of the party to conduct themselves with decorum during the party’s council congress slated for March 28.
The leaders gave the call on Wednesday during a stakeholders meeting in Obohia-Obibere community in Ikwuano local government council.
They said that a peaceful council congress would deepen the strength of PDP and appealed to members of the party to be calm as well as law abiding during the exercise.
In his speech, Chief Sam Onuigbo, the member representing Umuahia/Ikwuano Federal Constituency, charged members of PDP to make concerted efforts in ensuring the exercise would be peaceful and successful.
Onuigbo said that the party’s state caucus had outlined guidelines for conducting council congresses and urged members of PDP in Ikwuano to support the decisions of the party leadership.
He said that the essence of the stakeholders meeting was to ensure that the principles of equity and fairness were applied in the upcoming council congress in the area.
According to him, the state caucus issued a directive for PDP leadership positions in state, council and ward levels to be zoned appropriately to protect the general welfare of members.
Onuigbo said: “In Ikwuano there is an established method of zoning and I advise that the method should be put to use.We want to do our things smoothly and freely.
“So that there is no tension in the air.
We want a hitch free exercise and would not want a situation where people would use their position or connection to create problems.
“We have received several complaints about people who have invested in the party to facilitate its growth being sidelined. All that will be corrected.”
The PDP Assistant Treasurer in Abia, Chief Ikechi Arungwa, said that the outcome of the congress would play a determining role in the party’s success in 2023 general elections.
Arungwa urged members of the party to learn to “respect equity and to accommodate our brothers” in order to build a strong and healthy polity in the council.
Also, Chief Uche Achigbuo, the Secretary of PDP in Ikwuano local government council, described the upcoming council congress as a time for party faithfuls to do away with sentiments and work together.
Achiugbo urged members of the party to appropriately choice party leaders during the exercise, adding that it would greatly contribute in charting a course for the growth of the party.
Earlier, Chief Ibelachi C. Ibelachi, a member of the party, said that the action and inaction of members during the exercise would play a vital role in establishing a vibrant polity.
Ibelachi urged members of the party to conduct themselves with decorum during the council congress in the area.
