The Governor of Abia state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has assured that Nursing and Midwifery training in Abia state shall continue to enjoy Tuition Free .
He maintained that the present administration has put in place adequate measures to activate hospital and health institutions with the rehabilitation of General Hospitals in all the L.G.As of the State .
Governor Ikpeazu ,who made this disclosure through the Abia state Commissioner for Health ,Dr Joe Osuji on the occasion of the Capping / matriculation ceremony of the students of School of Basic Midwifery, Amachara ,Umuahia, pointed out that no meaningful healthcare could be achieved by the government without trained and committed registered Nurses and Midwives.
He congratulated the matriculants and urged them to be humble and study hard and to uphold the ethics and standards of the nursing profession ,even as he commended the Principal of the School of Basic Midwifery, Mrs Nwakaego Onyeukwu ,the teachers and the students of the school for a successful conduct of these capping ceremony.
In her speech, the Abia state Director of Nursing Services ministry of Health ,Mrs Ngozi Azubuine ,urged the students to be committed in their studies ,saying the profession is quite demanding and as such ,requires serious commitment.
According to her ,” I will not fail to remind you that your training has the profession ethics required and if any student fails to abide ,will be shown the way out “
Mrs Azubuine ,thank the Abia state Governor ,Dr Okezie Ikpeazu ,for his continuous support ,equipping and accreditation schools of Nursing and Midwifery in Abia ,while appealing for more supports ,even as she appreciated the permanent Secretary Abia state ministry of health, Chief Eze Egbulefu ,Sonny and the Commissioner for health Dr Joe Osuji for their fatherly advice .
Earlier on her speech, the Principal School of the Basic Midwifery ,Amachara ,Umuahia, Mrs Onyeukwu Nwakaego ,described the capping ceremony as a celebration of success by the students after their arduous first semester 1st year examination, revealing that it also marks the completion of step one in the nursing profession.
She pointed out that “basic Midwifery programme is specially established to produce skilled manpower who will proficiently attend to pregnant women even at the grass root thus reducing maternal mortality and morbidity .”
It is a 3 year programme after which the student is registered as a Midwife by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria”
In his opening remark ,the chairman of the occasion, Professor U.U Iweha ,commended the students for passing their first semester examinations which qualified them for the capping.
He pointed out that they are in for a great profession ,while urging them to take their academic work seriously .
