Ikpeazu urges judiciary members to restore confidence in Nigeria judiciary
As the Abia state judiciary marks its 2020/2021 legal year ,with a theme : judiciary staff as major stakeholders in justice delivery; the Abia state Governor ,Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has congratulated the members of the judiciary,saying the judiciary staff as a major stakeholders must endeavour to deepen the rule of law and accelerate justice administration without compromising the independence of the judiciary with a view to restoring the confidence in Nigeria judiciary.
Governor Ikpeazu who was represented at the occasion at the judiciary headquarters Umuahia by his deputy Rt Hon.Ude Oko Chukwu ,said the legal year provides opportunity for appraisal in the judiciary sector.He urged judiciary members to promote equal access to justice ,and take time in their work and hold themselves accountable .
The Governor said he is genuinely committed to do everything within his power and resources to provide the necessary enabling environment for the Abia state judiciary to discharge its functions and obligations effectively and efficiently for the common good of all .
In his speech, the chief judge of Abia state, Hon.Justice Onuoha Arisa Ogwe ,commended the Governor of the state and all the judiciary stakeholders for their contributions towards the growth and development of the judiciary sector ,while urging officers of the judiciary as major stakeholders in justice delivery system to ensure that litigants and others who visit the courts for one business or the other leave the courts happy and satisfied .
According to him ,”this can only be done when as major stakeholders, we maintain the desired standards ,decorum ,fairness and sincerity required in dealing with matters before us “
Addressing Newsmen on the statistics of high number of return of cases in Abia state customary courts for the year 2019/2020 ,the Abia state commissioner for justice, Hon .Uche Ihediwa ,explained that it is as a result of the pandemic ,noting that the covid-19 played a role ,while promising that the judiciary will look into it as the new legal year has started.
