FRSC CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY ACCIDENT REMEMBRANCE WEEK;AS JATAU ADVOCATES FOR PREVENTIVE MEASURES
The Federal Road Safety Corp Abia State Command Umuahia ,has been agog since this week following the celebration of this year’s Accident Remembrance week.
Explaining the relevance of the celebration ,the Abia State FRSC Sector Commander Mr. Meshach A. Jatau stated that the event is a United Nation’s resolution adopted 25 years ago and is celebrated annually.
According to Jatau “it is a programme that is meant to conscientise and educate the public regarding safety on our roads ,that it will make us remember the people that lost their lives through road crashes so as to avoid similar mistakes”
Part of activities slated by the Command to commemorate this year’s event in the State include ; Friday Jumaat Service at the Umuahia Central Mosque,Saturday hospital visitation at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia by 10am and Sunday Church service at ECWA Church Umuahia.
Speaking further the Abia State FRSC boss revealed that the World Health Organisation disaster report shows that about 1.3milion people die globally through road crashes.
Mr.Jatau opined that the Accident Remembrance week is part of programmes set aside with the view of reducing road crashes and where they occur ,as well as mitigate the consequences like the reduction of injuries and death.
In his words “the main purpose is for us to go into sober reflection to think of what happened to the people that lost their lives through road accidents and to put in place preventive measures to guard against similar occurrences and if it occurs the effect will be minimal”. he said
Citing the Abia State road accident statistics report, Mr.Jatau said that report from January 2020 to date shows that about 74 road crashes were reported with 275 people injured and 155 deaths.
He maintained that as part of safety measures for this year’s ember months in the State,the Command has put the following modalities in place (1) Public enlightenment through the media.(2) Motor Parks rally (3).Sensitization at religious worship centres on the need for vehicle owners to put their vehicles in order and obey road safety rules.
Avoid the following; over speeding,being under the influence of alcohol or hard drugs while using the roads. (3)Deployment of officers of the commander to ensure the removal of obstructions on the roads.
Also enforcement of rules and regulations guiding road use.
The Abia State FRSC Sectir Commander advised the motoring public on the need to avoid impatience and aggression ,while stating that the total number of road crashes affects the country’s GDP being that most of these accident victims are vibrant youths and young men and women.
He noted that the country has had a enough disasters that have consumed lives like kidnapping,armed robbery,ritual killings,thefts and so on.on ,pointing out that to maintain that, we need not add to our problems with thing we can avoid.
He opined that crashes are man made that is why they are not considered as accidents but road crashes.
Mr.Jatau encouraged motorists to always ensure that they obey road safety rules so that we can enjoy the Christmas and move into the new year.
