The Catholic Diocese of Umuahia has kicked off the the first centenary celebration with the unveiling of a statue in honour of the first Bishop of Umuahia diocese,late Bishop Anthony Nwedo.
Speaking shortly after unveiling the statue ,the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia diocese most Rev.Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, extolled the late Bishop for his outstanding Contributions to ensure the spreading of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ in Abia state and beyond.
He described him as a great preacher and educationist who not only preached the Gospel established schools for the training of the seminarians and the clergymen.
According to him , ” Bishop Anthony Nwedo was the pioneer bishop of Umuahia who inherited one diocese and bequeathed three Diocese
” He was the first Nigerian to become a residence Bishop and first to form a religious congregation
” He will most important be remembered for his holiness of life .
” We thank him for the pioneer work he did in Abia state “
