The Aboriginal People of Ohiya -Ukwu Community has appealed to Abia state government to support them become an autonomous Community as well as save them from the injustice they are receiving from the leadership of their present autonomous Community Ohiya autonomous Community.
This was made known by the President-General of Ohiya -Ukwu Community,Elder Raymond I Ekwuruibe during the Ohiya-Ukwu maiden Easter convention held at Nkwo-Ebo square, Umuahia South LGA ,Abia state.
According to him,” The movement started as Umunneato that later metamorphosed to what we have today as Ohiya-Ukwu Community through our gallant youths .We could not stay back and watch the injustice meted by Eze A.E. Uhuegbu of Ohiya autonomous Community and his committee members to Umunneato villages of Umuonyia ,Umuoram and Umuokwom over our collective patrimony Ohia uzo Afor-Ibeji Okata respectively”
He expressed appreciation to all the people of Ohiya-Ukwu Community for standing firm .
” However,the efforts would not have been progress if not for the backing of our Leader Barr(Sir) Longman Nwachukwu who was instrumental to the revoking of our land from Eze A.E Uhuegbu and the committee ,he set up to appropriate our patrimony,with the assistance of our proactive stakeholders,chief M.O Akoma, chief Ngozi Nwachukwu,High chief Kelechi Chukwu and late Iheanyi Obidike Ndudim” he said
In his speech, Barrister (Sir) Long man Nwachukwu (PhD) said the launch of Ohiya-Ukwu Community movement was to realize the agitation of the creation of Ohiya Ukwu autonomous Community.
He pointed out that Ohiya autonomous Community is too large a community to be under one leadership.
He noted that Ohiya autonomous Community has about 8 villages that each of them is large both in land mass and population and can be recognized as an autonomous Community.
He opined that the creation of Ohiya Ukwu autonomous Community will not help in expansion of the community for socio-political development,but will means that Ohiya people will be be represented by two traditional Rulers which will attract more development to the community.
In his contribution,Eze Rex Ohaeri ,the traditional Ruler of Mbochi autonomous Community in Umuahia North Local Government Area urged them to ensure peace in whatever they are doing to achieve their dream.
He said,” I grew up in this place and this place is my maternal place and I was invited by Barrister Longman .
” The Ohiya Ukwu autonomous Community they are agitating for will enhance development . I am here to encourage them,but peace should be followed”
