Abia state government will partner with the Nigerian Medical Association to promote quality healthcare delivery in the State.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the physician’s week ,2019 ,with theme : Care of the Unknown Patient: held at Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia ,organized by Nigerian Medical Association Abia state chapter, Abia state Governor ,Dr Okezie Ikpeazu ,who was represented by the Secretary to the State government, Barrister Chris Ezem,disclosed the readiness of Abia state government to collaborate with the NMA to provide quality health care delivery to Abians and the Abia state residents.
Governor Ikpeazu ,who also unveiled the design of the Secretariat of NMA Abia state chapter, assured Abia state doctors of the State government full support to see to the realization of the project. ” Abia state government will contribute handsomely to the NMA Secretariat project “
He commended the Association for choosing a heartwarming topic ,” care of the Unknown patient ” describing the topic as ‘thought provoking’ saying the need to save life is very important.
Speaking Earlier on ,the the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association Abia state branch, Dr (Mrs ) Carol Iwuoha ,pointed out that ” the theme of this year’s Physician’s week is poised to address an area of care where we have observed policy gaps as we believe that the life of every Nigerian is important including those who fall victims of road traffic accidents, severe memory loss and indeed health conditions that results in inability to identify a patient”
She underscored the importance of treating an unknown patient, while pointed out the need to look into the remuneration for the services rendered to unknown patient,saying this situation ” underscores the need for the provision of an emergency fund through which health facilities that care for these victims could be reimbursed “
Dr Iwuoha called on doctors to sharpen and discover their entrepreneurial skills within and outside the health care sector ,saying this will go along way in augmenting government efforts and provide employment opportunities to the unemployed youths .
She commended the Abia state government on the flag off of the the Abia state Social Health Insurance Scheme ,adding that it will go along way to addressing the health needs of people,even as she said ” NMA wish to request that efforts and resources be channeled towards upgrading Abia state Specialist hospital to provide opportunity for post graduate residency training of doctors in a few specialties” ,while commending the Governor Ikpeazu for addressing what she described as ” a need that has stared us in the face as an association despite several appeals from previous executives of the NMA and promises by past administrations ” adding that ” courtesy of his Excellency ‘s memo to the ministry of Lands ,the NMA Abia state now owns a piece of land here in umuahia for the development of our State Secretariat ” she noted .
