70% Of Diseases Suffer In Abia Are Preventable,Says Dr. Chinagozie Adindu

The Executive Secretary Abia state Primary Health Development Agency ,Dr Chinagozie Adindu ,has revealed that  “about seventy percent diseases we suffer from in Abia state are preventable ” saying ” If we work hard ,we can prevent seventy percent of our disease burden and protect over one million under five children that die in Nigeria”

Dr Adindu ,who disclosed this while interacting with newsmen at his office in Umuahia,said over fifty percent of under five deaths are as a result of malnutrition.
He lamented  that Nigeria occupies unenviable position as the country with the highest number of maternal and infant mortality which he described as very shameful,noting that a lot of people are dying every day as a result of preventable diseases .
Adindu ,disclosed that Abia state has about 746 primary Health facilities scattered all over the State  ,some which are aggregated as Primary Health Centers , some Health clinics and others Health posts ,depending on their services, adding that ,” we have our personnel scattered in the 292 political wards in the state , with the basic aim of ensuring that we reach out to the people and make sure we protect Abians from avoidable diseases and deaths “
He maintained that the main focus of his agency is mainly  to reduce maternal and child mortality, pointing out that maternal and child health activities are Paramount.
He frowned at women who go to unskilled staff to give birth ,saying it contributes to high rate of maternal mortality ,noting that the rate of maternal and infant mortality is very high in Abia state.
Adindu ,hinted that his agency ,handles issues of antenatal care ,post natal care ,deliveries ,family planning ,Nutrition ,treatment of minor ailments ,baby friendly initiative programs like basic sanitation ,adding that in primary Health Centers ,” We incorporate promotion of both preventive ,curative and rehabilitative services to make sure that our people are safe and reduce the burden of diseases in our society “
He lauded  some of  the donors and partners for their contributions ,saying at the moment , ” we have the Health Policy plus ,a subsidiary of USA and United State International Development ,who are offering technical assistance , the Challenged Initiative ,who are helping us in training our workers ,renovating some of the Health Centers ,equipping them and providing family planning commodities and services, the UNFPA ,who provides us with sufficient quantity of family planning commodities and assistance in maternal and perinatal death surveillance, the W.H.O ,which provides technical assistance, the UNICEF ,who provides us with vaccines and logistics that we use for immunization”
Dr Adindu ,further ,commended the Governor of Abia state Dr Okezie Ikpeazu ,describing him as health friendly Governor ,who has been providing for the development of Health Centers in Abia ,and has paid counterpart funds to world bank to improve Abia state health care delivery services and to ensure that Abians are given affordable ,accessible and acceptable qualitative health care services.
