The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and Chairman, Publicity and Media Rt Hon Ifeanyi Uchendu has disclosed that the impeachment of the former Speaker of the 7th Abia House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji was carried out as a result of over high-handedness, misconduct, embezzlement among other issues ,added that it was done within the ambit of the law.
Explaining to newsmen in Umuahia, Rt. Hon.Ifeanyi Uchendu, pointed out that “the members that impeached the former Speaker sat on Government property, and impeached him”revealed that he has ran the House like his own personal business which necessitated the impeachment.
He further disclosed that as lawmakers , they are supposed to sit at least for 180 days in a year, informing that they didn’t meet the stipulated number of days according to the constitution of the federal government.
Continuing, Rt Hon Uchendu further informed that Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji has not been carrying all members in what he has been doing, and has refused to listen to advise to get remedy to the series of problems which he caused in the House.
Commenting on why it took them time to impeach him, Uchendu, said they have been gathering signatures as well as expected him to change, but to no avail.
Rt Hon.maintanined that they acted in accordance with the constitution, explained that the constitution said such action must be carried out in any government premises.
Speaking on the suspension of the 16 House Assembly members that impeached Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, Hon. Uchendu, pointed out that the 16 members formed a quorum and met the provisions of the constitution bothering on impeachment of the Speaker, describing the suspension presided over by Rt. Hon Chinedum Orji as drama as they were not done in accordance to the law
Going further he revealed that Hon. Chukwudi Apugo is the new Speaker of the Abia state House of Assembly.
